We audited 940 German dentists: 62% book online, 66% no ad pixel

We checked the top Google Maps results for 'Zahnarzt' across 8 German cities — 940 dental practices. 62% offer online booking and the median practice has 37 reviews, but 66.4% of reachable websites carry no advertising pixel and the Meta pixel appears on only 2%. Dentists have solved booking; the gap is measurement.

We checked the top Google Maps results for "Zahnarzt" in 8 German cities — Berlin, Hamburg, München, Köln, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and Leipzig — and analysed 940 dental practices. For each we read the Google profile and fetched the homepage once; 711 websites were reachable. Dentists are the most developed of the six niches we audited: 62% offer online booking (Doctolib and Dr. Flex lead), the median practice has 37 reviews, and 14.9% have all the marketing basics covered — the highest share of any niche in the study, well above the 7.5% average across all 5,287 businesses. But the tracking gap is wide: 66.4% of the 711 reachable dentist websites carry no advertising pixel of any kind, and the Meta pixel appears on only 2%. Dentists have solved appointment booking; the gap is measurement and paid acquisition. Data was collected on 2026-09-23.

Key findings

62% of the 711 reachable dentist websites offer online booking. Doctolib and Dr. Flex lead among booking platforms. This is the highest booking share of any niche in the study — beauty salons sit at 52.9%, while tax advisors (4.4%) and roofers (0.9%) barely register. Dentists have built the infrastructure for patient acquisition; the question is whether they can measure what happens after the click.

66.4% of reachable dentist websites carry no advertising pixel of any kind. The Meta pixel appears on only 2% of the 711 sites — the weakest Meta pixel share in the study alongside tax advisors. The Google tag is the most common pixel overall at 24.2% across all niches. These are lower-bound figures: pixels behind a cookie banner are invisible to an automated visit.

The median dentist has 37 reviews — 12 times the median of tax advisors (3). Only 12.9% of the 940 dentists have fewer than 10 reviews, compared to 75.1% of tax advisors. Reviews are the area where dentists are strongest: the booking flow generates patients, and those patients leave feedback.

14.9% of the 940 dentists (140 practices) have all the marketing basics covered — the highest share of any niche, and double the 7.5% average across all 5,287 businesses. 79.8% have at least one gap, and 20.4% miss three or more. For comparison, 62.8% of tax advisors and 55.5% of roofers miss three or more.

14.6% of the 940 dentists have no website, and 19.8% have an unclaimed Google profile. Both figures are below the overall averages (16.8% no website, 22.4% unclaimed across all niches). Roofers are the worst on both: 25% no website, 36% unclaimed. Dentists are present on Google and on the web — they just are not measuring what happens there.

How dentists compare to the other five niches

Signal Dentists (n = 940) All 6 niches (n = 5,287)
At least 1 gap 79.8% 87.2%
3 or more gaps 20.4% 35.9%
All basics covered 14.9% (140) 7.5% (399)
No website 14.6% 16.8%
Unclaimed Google profile 19.8% 22.4%
No advertising pixel (of reachable sites) 66.4% 74.4%
Meta pixel (of reachable sites) 2% 3.7%
Median reviews 37 14

Dentists lead on every signal. The biggest gap between dentists and the overall average is on reviews (median 37 vs 14) and on the share with all basics covered (14.9% vs 7.5%). The smallest gap is on the unclaimed profile (19.8% vs 22.4%) — roughly one in five dentist profiles is unclaimed, close to the overall rate.

Where the gaps are

Booking: solved

62% of reachable dentist websites have an online booking tool. Doctolib and Dr. Flex are the dominant platforms. This is not a niche where an agency needs to build a booking funnel from scratch — the funnel exists. The opportunity is in tracking and optimising the traffic that feeds it, not in creating the booking layer.

Tracking: the biggest gap

66.4% of the 711 reachable dentist websites carry no advertising pixel of any kind. The Meta pixel is on only 2%. A real-browser calibration on 120 sites across all niches agreed on 357 of 360 checks (120 sites × 3 pixel types), so the automated detection is reliable for what it can see — but pixels that load only after cookie consent are invisible to both methods. The real pixel share is higher than what we report.

German healthcare advertising law (Heilmittelwerbegesetz) constrains how dental practices can advertise. That partly explains the low Meta pixel share. But it does not explain the absence of a Google tag, which is not ad-specific — it is basic measurement infrastructure. A practice that has Doctolib but no Google tag knows how many appointments were booked but not which traffic source drove the patient who booked.

Reviews: the strongest asset

The median dentist has 37 reviews — the highest median in the study. Only 12.9% have fewer than 10. Tax advisors have a median of 3, roofers 4. Dentists have about 12 times the median reviews of tax advisors. The review base is strong, but 79.9% of all businesses in the study have fewer than 50 reviews, and dentists are no exception on the upper end — most practices have a steady trickle, not a review engine.

Profile and website basics

14.6% of dentists have no website — below the overall 16.8%. 19.8% have an unclaimed Google profile, below the 22.4% overall. The website is usually there. The basics that tax advisors and roofers are missing — a website, a claimed profile, a handful of reviews — dentists already have. What they are missing is the layer above the basics.

What this means for agencies

Dentists are a growth pitch, not a setup pitch. The booking infrastructure is in place (62% online booking), the reviews are in place (median 37), and 14.6% have no website — the lowest no-website share after real estate agents (8.4%). What is missing is measurement: 66.4% of reachable websites have no advertising pixel, and the Meta pixel is on only 2%.

The pitch writes itself. A dentist with Doctolib but no Google tag cannot tell you how a new patient found them. A dentist running Meta ads without a pixel — which we found at the overall level, where 37.5% of the 64 active advertisers had no pixel on their site — is paying for traffic they cannot measure or retarget. Install the tracking, connect it to the booking flow, and you can show the practice exactly which channel produces appointments.

German healthcare advertising law (Heilmittelwerbegesetz) constrains ad content, so tailor the pitch to measurement and review generation rather than aggressive paid acquisition. The practices that already have booking and reviews need the connective tissue between the two: a pixel on the site, a tag manager, a dashboard that shows the booking funnel. That is a higher-value engagement than setting up a Google profile, and it is the gap dentists actually have.

CloseFast (closefa.st) ran this audit — the same scan works on any niche and city. If you want to find the dentists in your target city who have booking but no tracking, run the same audit on your niche and city. You can also check any website's ad tracking for free.

Methodology

Source. Google Maps search results — the top results for "Zahnarzt" in each of 8 German cities (Berlin, Hamburg, München, Köln, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Leipzig), capped at 120 per city. This is the businesses Google Maps shows, not a census of every dentist in Germany.

Dates. Data was collected on 2026-09-23.

Sample sizes. 940 dental practices were analysed. Of the real websites (excluding social profiles), 711 were reachable and fetched successfully. The full study covers 5,287 businesses across 6 niches; 5,694 were scraped and 407 excluded as off-niche (Google category did not match).

What "detected" means. Website signals were detected in the homepage HTML by an automated fetch. "Not detected" means not found on the homepage, not proven absent. Tracking pixels were detected the same way — a pixel that loads only after cookie consent is invisible to both the automated fetch and the calibration browser check.

Pixel detection calibration. On 120 of the reachable websites (across all niches) we re-checked pixel detection in a real browser. The automated check agreed on 357 of 360 checks (120 sites × 3 pixel types: Meta, Google, TikTok), missed 3, and produced no false positives. The browser check also ran before any cookie consent was given, so consent-gated pixels are invisible to both methods — pixel shares remain a lower bound.

Meta ads. Ads were checked per Facebook page in the Meta Ad Library (active ads in Germany). Only 18.8% of all businesses (992 of 5,287) link or list a Facebook page we could identify. 379 pages returned a clear answer. Per-niche advertiser counts are 4–22, far below the n ≥ 30 reporting threshold, so no per-niche ad shares are reported in this post.

Google Ads activity was not measured.

Limitations

This is a sample of the businesses Google Maps returns for "Zahnarzt" in each city, capped per city — visible businesses, not a census of every practice. Website signals are detected in the homepage HTML; "not detected" means not found on the homepage, not proven absent. Tracking pixels that load only after cookie consent cannot be seen by an automated visit, so pixel shares are a lower bound. Meta ads were checked only for businesses whose Facebook page could be identified; ad shares apply to that subset. Top Maps results skew towards well-rated businesses, so we do not report a ratings finding. Per-niche advertiser counts in the Meta Ad Library are below 30, so no per-niche ad-share figures are given.

Frequently asked questions

How many German dentists were audited in this study?+

940 dental practices across 8 German cities (Berlin, Hamburg, München, Köln, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Leipzig). The sample is the top Google Maps results for 'Zahnarzt' in each city, capped at 120 — visible businesses, not a census of every dentist in Germany. Of the 940 practices, 711 had a reachable website. Data was collected on 2026-09-23.

What percentage of German dentists offer online booking?+

62% of the 711 reachable dentist websites had an online booking tool detected. Doctolib and Dr. Flex lead among booking platforms in this niche. This is the highest booking share of any niche in the study — beauty salons are next at 52.9%. Tax advisors (4.4%) and roofers (0.9%) barely register.

How many German dentist websites have no advertising pixel?+

66.4% of the 711 reachable dentist websites carried no advertising pixel of any kind. The Meta pixel appeared on only 2% — the lowest Meta pixel share alongside tax advisors. These are lower-bound figures: pixels that load only after cookie consent are invisible to an automated visit, confirmed by a real-browser calibration that agreed on 357 of 360 checks.

How do German dentists compare to other local business niches?+

Dentists are the most developed of the 6 niches audited. 14.9% (140 of 940) have all the marketing basics covered — the highest share, well above the 7.5% average across all 5,287 businesses. The median dentist has 37 reviews, compared to 3 for tax advisors and 4 for roofers. Only 20.4% of dentists miss three or more basics, versus 62.8% of tax advisors and 55.5% of roofers.

Were any German dentists running Meta ads?+

We checked the Meta Ad Library for a sample of dentist Facebook pages. Per-niche advertiser counts in our sample were below 30, so we do not report a dentist-specific ad share. Across all 5,287 businesses, 16.9% of the 379 checked Facebook pages were running Meta ads, and 37.5% of those 64 advertisers had no tracking pixel on their website.

Can I run this same audit on dentists in my city?+

Yes. CloseFast (closefa.st) ran this audit and runs the same scan on any niche and city combination. You get the same gap-by-gap breakdown — no website, unclaimed profile, thin reviews, missing pixels, no booking — filtered to your prospect list. A free ad checker is also available at closefa.st/ads-checker.
