We audited 5,287 German local businesses: where the marketing gaps are

We checked the top Google Maps results for 6 local-business niches across 8 German cities — 5,287 businesses in total. Only 7.5% have all the marketing basics covered. 1 in 6 has no website at all, 74.4% of reachable websites carry no advertising pixel, and 22.4% haven't claimed their Google profile.

We checked the top Google Maps results for 6 local-business niches across 8 German cities — dentists, tax advisors, physiotherapy practices, real estate agents, beauty salons and roofers in Berlin, Hamburg, München, Köln, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and Leipzig. After removing 407 off-niche results, 5,287 businesses remained. For each we read the Google profile, fetched the homepage once (3,579 were reachable), and checked the Meta Ad Library for active ads on a sample of Facebook pages. Data was collected on 2026-09-23.

Only 7.5% (399 of 5,287) have all the marketing basics covered. 87.2% miss at least one; 35.9% miss three or more. 1 in 6 has no website (16.8%), 22.4% have an unclaimed Google profile, and 74.4% of reachable websites carry no advertising pixel. The gaps cluster by niche: tax advisors and roofers are "from zero" businesses, while dentists and beauty salons have solved booking but not measurement. Niche choice matters more than city choice.

Key findings

Only 399 of 5,287 businesses (7.5%) have all the basics covered. 87.2% miss at least one of five fundamentals — no website, unclaimed Google profile, under 10 reviews, under 10 photos, or no advertising pixel on a reachable website. Over a third (35.9%) miss three or more.

1 in 6 has no website (16.8%). Roofers are the worst affected — 25% have no website — while real estate agents are the lowest at 8.4%. Roofers are 3 times as likely to have no website as real estate agents.

22.4% of the 5,287 businesses have an unclaimed Google profile. Roofers (36%) and tax advisors (34.8%) are the highest; real estate agents are the lowest at 9.3%. Roofers are 3.9 times as likely as real estate agents to have an unclaimed profile.

Reviews are thin. The median business has 14 reviews, and 79.9% have fewer than 50. The spread by niche is wide: dentists have a median of 37, while tax advisors have a median of 3 and roofers have a median of 4. Dentists have about 12 times the median reviews of tax advisors.

74.4% of reachable websites carry no advertising pixel of any kind. The Meta pixel appeared on only 3.7% of the 3,579 reachable websites, and a Google tag on 24.2%. These shares are a lower bound — pixels behind a cookie banner are invisible to an automated visit.

Of the 64 businesses running Meta ads, 37.5% (24) had no tracking pixel on their site. We checked 379 Facebook pages in the Meta Ad Library; 64 were running active ads. Nearly two in five of those advertisers were spending on traffic they could not measure or retarget — paying for clicks with no way to see what happened next.

The gap count by niche

Five basics, each counted as a gap: no website (or only a social profile) · unclaimed Google profile · under 10 reviews · under 10 photos · no advertising pixel on a reachable website. "All basics covered" = none of the five gaps plus at least 50 reviews.

Niche n ≥1 gap ≥2 gaps ≥3 gaps All basics covered
All businesses 5,287 87.2% 62.8% 35.9% 7.5% (399)
Dentists 940 79.8% 51.9% 20.4% 14.9% (140)
Tax advisors 927 97.1% 87.5% 62.8% 0.8% (7)
Physiotherapy practices 874 87.2% 58% 31.9% 6.9% (60)
Real estate agents 926 84.2% 59.2% 28.4% 9.4% (87)
Beauty salons 861 81.2% 42.7% 18.6% 11.4% (98)
Roofers 759 95% 78.5% 55.5% 0.9% (7)

Tax advisors and roofers stand out: both have over 95% of businesses with at least one gap, over 55% with three or more, and under 1% with all basics covered. Dentists and beauty salons are the most developed, but even dentists — the best-performing niche — have only 14.9% fully covered.

Where the gaps are, by signal

No website

16.8% of all 5,287 businesses have no website. Roofers are the highest at 25%, followed by beauty salons at 19.5% and physiotherapy practices at 15.6%. Real estate agents are the lowest at 8.4%. Dentists sit at 14.6%. For a web-design agency, the trades and personal-care niches are the clearest setup-pitch targets.

Unclaimed Google profile

22.4% of businesses haven't claimed their Google Business Profile. Roofers (36%) and tax advisors (34.8%) lead; real estate agents (9.3%) and beauty salons are lowest. Claiming a profile is free and takes minutes — which makes it one of the easiest things to sell, because the ROI is immediate and visible.

Reviews and photos

The median business has 14 reviews and a 4.9 rating (top Maps results skew towards well-rated businesses, so don't treat this as a quality finding). 79.9% have under 50 reviews. Tax advisors (median 3 reviews) and roofers (median 4) are nearly invisible on review volume — dentists (median 37) are the only niche where most businesses have meaningful review depth.

No tracking pixel

74.4% of reachable websites have no advertising pixel of any kind. The Google tag is the most common at 24.2%; the Meta pixel is on only 3.7%. Pixels that load only after consent are invisible to our automated check — so the real pixel share is higher than what we report. A real-browser calibration on 120 sites agreed on 357 of 360 checks, confirming the automated method is reliable for what it can see.

No online booking

Online booking splits sharply by niche. Dentists lead at 62%, beauty salons at 52.9%, and physiotherapy practices at 22.3%. Tax advisors (4.4%), real estate agents (4.3%) and roofers (0.9%) barely register. Booking-platform adoption mirrors this: Doctolib and Dr. Flex dominate among dentists, Treatwell among beauty salons.

Stale copyright year

26.6% of sites that display a copyright year show 2023 or older — a quick signal that the site hasn't been touched in a while. The rest are split between sites showing the current year and sites showing no copyright year at all.

City differences (use sparingly)

Niche is the bigger story, but two city differences are real: Berlin has the highest no-website share at 21.9% and München the lowest at 12.5% — a difference of 9.4 points, and the confidence intervals don't overlap. Berlin also has the most unclaimed profiles (28.3%) versus München (18.8%) and Frankfurt am Main (18.9%). Only 4.5% of Berlin businesses have all basics covered, versus 9.6% in München. For other city comparisons the intervals overlap — call them similar.

What this means for agencies

The gaps cluster by niche, and the pitch should match where the niche is.

Tax advisors and roofers are "from zero" niches. No site, unclaimed profile, a handful of reviews, no booking, no pixel. The pitch is setup: build a basic website, claim and optimise the Google profile, start a review pipeline. These are the easiest businesses to find and the easiest to show value — almost every competitor is in the same state.

Dentists and beauty salons have solved booking but not measurement. Dentists have 62% online booking and a median of 37 reviews, but 66.4% of their reachable websites have no ad pixel and the Meta pixel is on only 2%. Beauty salons are the most social niche — 52.8% link Instagram — and have the highest Meta pixel share at 8.2%, but 19.5% have no website at all. The pitch here is growth: install tracking, start paid acquisition, build a review engine on top of the booking flow.

Real estate agents are the most developed. Lowest no-website share (8.4%), lowest unclaimed share (9.3%), highest Instagram linking after beauty salons (44.6%), Google tag on 33.3%. But reviews are still thin (median 14; 43% under 10) and 66.1% have no ad pixel. The pitch is optimisation and performance marketing, not setup.

Methodology

Source. Google Maps search results — the top results per niche and city, capped at 120 per niche-city combination. We searched the German term for each niche ("Zahnarzt", "Steuerberater", "Physiotherapie", "Immobilienmakler", "Kosmetikstudio", "Dachdecker") in each of the 8 cities. This is the businesses Google Maps shows, not a census of every practice in Germany.

Dates. Data was collected on 2026-09-23.

Sample sizes. 5,694 businesses were scraped; 407 were excluded as off-niche (Google category didn't match), leaving 5,287 analysed. Of the real websites (excluding social profiles), 3,579 were reachable and fetched successfully.

What "detected" means. Website signals were detected in the homepage HTML by an automated fetch. "Not detected" means not found on the homepage, not proven absent. Tracking pixels were detected the same way — a pixel that loads only after cookie consent is invisible to both the automated fetch and the calibration browser check.

Pixel detection calibration. On 120 of the reachable websites we re-checked pixel detection in a real browser. The automated check agreed on 357 of 360 checks (120 sites × 3 pixel types: Meta, Google, TikTok), missed 3, and produced no false positives. The browser check also ran before any cookie consent was given, so consent-gated pixels are invisible to both methods — pixel shares remain a lower bound.

Meta ads. Ads were checked per Facebook page in the Meta Ad Library (active ads in Germany). Only 18.8% of businesses (992 of 5,287) link or list a Facebook page we could identify, and we checked up to 80 pages per niche. 379 pages returned a clear answer. Businesses that maintain a Facebook page are more likely to advertise than those that don't — these shares describe businesses with a Facebook page, never extrapolate them to all 5,287.

Google Ads activity was not measured.

Limitations

This is a sample of the businesses Google Maps returns for each search in each city, capped per city — visible businesses, not a census of every practice. Website signals are detected in the homepage HTML; "not detected" means not found on the homepage, not proven absent. Tracking pixels that load only after cookie consent cannot be seen by an automated visit, so pixel shares are a lower bound. Meta ads were checked only for businesses whose Facebook page could be identified; ad shares apply to that subset. The median rating is 4.9 overall — top Maps results skew towards well-rated businesses, so we don't report a ratings finding. Per-niche advertiser counts in the Meta Ad Library are 4–22, far below our reporting threshold of 30, so no per-niche "spending blind" figures are given.

Frequently asked questions

How many German local businesses were audited in this study?+

5,287 businesses across 6 niches (dentists, tax advisors, physiotherapy practices, real estate agents, beauty salons, roofers) and 8 cities (Berlin, Hamburg, München, Köln, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Leipzig). The sample is the top Google Maps results per niche and city, capped at 120 per combination — visible businesses, not a census of every practice in Germany. Data was collected on 2026-09-23.

What does 'all the basics covered' mean?+

A business had none of five gaps — no website (or only a social profile), unclaimed Google profile, under 10 reviews, under 10 photos, no advertising pixel on a reachable website — and had at least 50 reviews. Only 399 of the 5,287 businesses (7.5%) met that bar. 87.2% had at least one gap, and 35.9% had three or more.

Which niche has the most marketing gaps?+

Tax advisors and roofers are the least developed. Tax advisors had only 0.8% with all basics covered (7 of 927); roofers had 0.9% (7 of 759). Both niches had median reviews of 3–4, high unclaimed-profile shares (34.8% and 36%), and over 55% of businesses missing three or more basics. Dentists were the most developed at 14.9%.

How many businesses have no advertising pixel on their website?+

74.4% of the 3,579 reachable websites carried no advertising pixel of any kind. The Meta pixel appeared on only 3.7%, and a Google tag on 24.2%. These figures are a lower bound — pixels that load only after cookie consent are invisible to an automated visit, as confirmed by a real-browser calibration that agreed on 357 of 360 checks.

Were businesses running Meta ads without tracking?+

Yes. Of the 379 Facebook pages we checked in the Meta Ad Library, 64 (16.9%) were running active ads. Of those 64 advertisers, 37.5% (24) had no advertising pixel of any kind on their website — they were paying for traffic they could not measure or retarget. This figure describes businesses with a Facebook page, not all 5,287 businesses.

Can I run this same audit on my own niche and city?+

Yes. CloseFast (closefa.st) ran this audit and runs the same scan on any niche and city combination. You get the same gap-by-gap breakdown — no website, unclaimed profile, thin reviews, missing pixels, no booking — filtered to your prospect list. A free ad checker is also available at closefa.st/ads-checker.
